The Bairns

We have named our wee schoolchildren. It was agreed that they could have names when their faces have been embroidered. So in true Caithness dialect we have a Chon. The letter 'J' is pronounced 'Ch'.  Top left is Euphemia or Phemie, Then there is Isaac, Chorge (George). Bottom left is Cissy, Then Katie in the middle and Chon (John) in the beautiful green jumper. We have a name for the schoolteacher but we will keep that secret until her face has been sewn.

Valerie has embroidered using a chain stitch and some weaving on the green jumper. Looking closely it does look like a stocking stitch pattern with a cable running up his arm. His trousers were weaved.

Dorothy added the detail of Katie's hair. They are fish which was one of the main industries at the time. Check the auburn hair style of the boy above her.

Louise was delighted to hear that Valerie and Dorothy now share her opinion that the tapestry is all encompassing and totally enjoyed their time slots. It does take alot of time but when you see the results its worth the mess the house gets into whilst we ignore the world stitching away.

We took the tapestry off its frame and were all working on it at one time when at the Tuesday meeting. This seems to be easier and whilst we are keeping a close eye on our tension we enjoyed all working at the same time. The Prestonpans tapestry book has been well thumbed now and is a constant companion.
